How much of the LP-optimal revenue
are NEM batteries actually capturing?

The Capture Index benchmarks every grid-scale BESS in the NEM against the LP-optimal dispatch outcome — identifying the exact size and source of the performance gap, by region, by company, by asset.

Capture rate by NEM region

LP-optimal benchmark vs actual SCADA dispatch, Q3 2026 (Jul – Sep 2026). Computed from AEMO NEMWEB records.

Where does the performance gap come from?

The 59.2% average gap is decomposed into three structural sources using LP counterfactual analysis. NEM-wide average, Q3 2026.

G-SIG
G-THR
G-PRO
G-SIG — Signalling gap
Missed high-price dispatch windows due to advisory signal gaps: wind drought misclassification, IC constraint under-prediction, or no signal at all.
0%
G-THR — Threshold gap
Revenue lost to overly conservative SOC floors and charge/discharge thresholds — particularly visible in SA1 during high-constraint periods.
0%
G-PRO — Protocol gap
Operator-specific dispatch protocol divergence from LP-optimal — FCAS co-optimisation conflicts, manual overrides, and proprietary bid strategies.
0%
Gap attribution uses LP counterfactual simulation on AEMO DISPATCHPRICE and SCADA actuals. Each gap category is computed by switching off one source of sub-optimality at a time and measuring the revenue recovery.

How the Index is built

The Capture Index uses LP-optimal dispatch simulation against AEMO SCADA and DISPATCHPRICE actuals.

⚡

LP-optimal benchmark

For each DUID, we solve a linear programme over AEMO DISPATCHPRICE with asset-level capacity, ramp, and SOC constraints — this is the theoretical revenue ceiling.

📡

SCADA actuals

Actual dispatch (MW) is sourced from AEMO DISPATCHSCADA at 5-minute resolution. Revenue is computed using DISPATCHPRICE for the asset's region and connection point MLF.

🔍

Gap attribution

The gap between LP-optimal and actual revenue is decomposed into G-SIG, G-THR, and G-PRO using counterfactual simulation — each source is isolated and quantified independently.

Pre-publication audit: All figures are verified by an independent pre-publication data audit before each release. The audit checks LP accuracy, SCADA data completeness, and methodology consistency. AUDIT_PASS is required before any figure is published. This process is documented in the Synertia methodology note.
